A recent study by Diabetic.org set out to rank the best cities for sober living in the United States, naming Harrisburg, PA, in second place. The state capital was just edged out of first place by Madison, WI, which received the highest score for sober living due to its affordability, a high number of SAMHSA health treatment centers, and robust opportunities for recovery-friendly community activities.
Harrisburg received accolades for its treatment infrastructure and number of social associations where individuals can find a sense of community and belonging. When compared to other major US cities, Harrisburg also offers more Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meeting locations and provides greater access to affordable living arrangements.
Gaudenzia is proud to be part of Harrisburg’s SUD treatment and recovery network. Our Harrisburg drug and alcohol treatment programs provide services that include detoxification, high-intensity residential SUD treatment, MAT as an option, affordable housing, and more. The Best Places for Sober Living

To rank the best cities for sober living, researchers compiled a list of the 100 largest US cities, scoring each based on 26 factors that support maintaining a lifestyle in long-term recovery. These factors were broken down into the following categories:
Temptation Factors
The study looked at environmental factors that could potentially impact how often an individual in recovery may encounter triggering situations or people. Such “temptation factors” included metrics like:
- The number of bars per 100k people
- The percentage of the population considered to drink excessively vs. non-drinkers
- The average amount of alcohol consumption in gallons
- The percentage of the population that engages in illicit drug use, hard drug use, and smoking marijuana
Sobriety Infrastructure & Opportunity Factors
An essential component of recovery-friendly living centers around access to — and the availability of — a robust network of treatment programs, resources, and peer support. Sobriety infrastructure and recovery opportunity factors included:
- The number of recovery homes per 100k people
- The number addiction treatment programs and mental health facilities per 100k people
- The number of AA and NA meeting locations per 100k people
- The percentage of adults with anxiety/depressive disorders
- The number of SAMHSA health treatment services per 100k people
- The number of meditation classes per 100k people
- Median house sale price and average monthly rent
- The percentage of housing insecure individuals per 1,000 residents
- Unemployment rates
Community and Activity Factors
For those in recovery, opportunities to engage in recovery-friendly activities help support a healthy lifestyle. To measure the availability of activities residents can engage in that do not involve drug or alcohol consumption, the study looked at:
- The number of non-profit organizations per 10k people
- The percentage of residents who volunteer
- The number of social associations per 100k people
- The percentage of residents living within a 10-minute walk of a park
- The percentage of land used for parks, and the respective number of parks and trails per 100k people.
