A Q&A with Michelle Sobek
Today we turn the spotlight on Michelle Sobek, who joined Gaudenzia two years ago and currently serves as an LPN and Nursing Case Manager. We spoke with Michelle to learn more about her journey with Gaudenzia and what keeps her motivated.

What Made You Want to Work at Gaudenzia?
I love the fact that it’s a way for me to give back, and I can relate. A lot of clients look at me and they don’t think I’ve had a drug problem, but then when they find out, they see that it’s possible to recover. I’ve been a nurse since 2014, but I never worked in treatment. Coming in here, I felt like this is where I’m meant to be.
What Keeps You Coming Back to Work Every Day?
The ones that make it. Every once in a while, we’ll get a phone call from somebody who says they’re doing good. I’ll go to a meeting or an event, and I’ll see a client there, and that’s why I do it. It’s worth it.

What’s the Best Part About Your Team?
Every person that works here plays a part in the big picture. Nobody gets it worse than anybody else. Being a nurse, I hold client medication, so people either love me or hate me. The first three days, they usually hate me. You can get burnt out at times, but just knowing the other staff have my back helps. We all have each other’s back. We’re in it together.
Why is This Program Important in This Community?
I believe in the men’s long-term. The prisons and the jails are overrun with people who have drug and alcohol problems, and they’re not going to get the help they need. I believe in this program because it’s a way for people to get a second chance — I believe in all of it as a whole, but I really love the men’s long-term. We have all the levels of care here, and it’s lifesaving.
What Services Do People Most Commonly Need When They Leave?
When someone starts medication-assisted maintenance here, or if they meet the psychiatrist in here and start on mental health medication, I want them to have that next appointment set up before they leave. I used to have mixed feelings about maintenance but working here has definitely changed my opinion of it. I believe it works for some people.
