  Fun Facts and Interesting
Tidbits about Gaudenzia

In 1981 an internal study revealed that the average client who completed the residential program stayed in treatment for 21 months.

Gaudenzia maintained the first women's and children's program for roughly 10 years at a deficit because in the beginning of these programs, nobody paid for the children to be there.

In a September 1970 article in the Medical Times (vol. 98, No. 9) we described our "detoxification unit" as "a couch in the living room, a jug of eggnog, and someone to talk to".

Robert P. Kelly became the Chairman of the Board in March of 1980 and has been the Chairman ever since.

On Dec. 21, 1984 House Bill 2368 conveyed the Westtown property to Gaudenzia after we demonstrated that we would save Pennsylvania millions of dollars by treating and completing clients. That analysis became part of the Congressional record.

Our first contract began in March of 1969 to treat 25 clients. There were 8 employees. By 1971, we were being paid $11.50 per day for those slots, but there we plenty of folks in the house who had no funding. Much of the food and all of the furniture was donated.

In 1995 we did an internal survey and found that graduating clients had entered treatment an average of 19 months prior to their evaluation to become a graduate.

As of 9-16-04, Gaudenzia had 674 employees.

Gaudenzia’s Vantage House in Lancaster, Pennsylvania was one of the first residential therapeutic communities in the U.S. that allowed addicted women to bring their children into treatment with them.

In 1987, Gaudenzia introduced an after-school prevention program, Centro Primavera, serving Latino children in one of the most drug-impacted sections of North Philadelphia. To this day the program continues to provide a multitude of services to the youth of this area.

Gaudenzia opened one of the first programs on the eastern seaboard for individuals with co-occurring disorders of chemical dependency and mental illness. Today Gaudenzia operates six of these programs throughout Pennsylvania.

Gaudenzia serves the homeless at several residential programs: Joy of Living, New Beginnings, and New Image.

In 1989 Gaudenzia opened People with Hope, Philadelphia’s first residential treatment program exclusively dedicated for addicted individuals living with HIV/AIDS.
