Exercising the right to vote takes on special meaning at Gaudenzia, especially as a client in a residential program setting. Witness the caring and commitment of Gaudenzia program staff who make it happen. Approximately one month prior to Election Day, all the residents of Gaudenzia Vantage in Lancaster, PA attended a seminar conducted by Prevention Supervisor Karen Plowman. Each woman received voter registration information, including an application for an absentee ballot. The application process is not a simple task to arrange, given the dynamic nature of Gaudenzia’s residential program populations, which can fluctuate at any given moment. Election guidelines stipulate that one month’s residency is required in order to be registered locally. Imagine the frenzy to complete and file all the necessary paperwork before the voter registration deadline! The next task was to educate our resident clients about the local candidates and their stances on the issues. At Gaudenzia Vantage, Karen Plowman chose to circulate a bipartisan booklet circulated by the local newspapers to learn more about the candidates. On Election Day, residents of Gaudenzia Vantage who were eligible to vote went to the local polling location to cast their ballots, alongside members of the Lancaster community. Just another day at Gaudenzia!
