Gaudenzia Tioga Arms Project Receives $2.7 Million

The City of Philadelphia recently held a press conference at the future site of Gaudenzia’s Tioga Arms project to announce that Philadelphia has received $25 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for homeless families and individuals. Gaudenzia’s Tioga Arms project was the largest recipient of the money receiving over $2.7 million.

Michael Harle, executive director, Gaudenzia, Inc. was joined by Kevin Hanna, secretary, Philadelphia Office of Housing and Neighborhood Preservation and Milton R. Pratt, Jr., regional director, HUD and Robert Hess, deputy managing director, Philadelphia Special Needs Housing in announcing the $25 million grant to the City of Philadelphia. Also on hand were Councilwoman Donna Reed-Miller and Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell who offered up their congratulations to the city and Gaudenzia.

Gaudenzia Tioga Arms will be permanent rental housing for formerly homeless families with children who are in recovery from chemical dependency. The families will receive extensive supportive services on-site such as childcare, adult learning, and life skills related to employment and daily living. The Gaudenzia Tioga Arms project will provide a critical piece in the Continuum of Care – permanent housing; allowing clients from existing Gaudenzia and transitional housing facilities access to decent and affordable housing.

The rehabilitation of the project site at 1828-30 West Tioga in North Philadelphia will involve substantial renovation to a currently blighted and vacant 29,000 square foot building to allow for 22 units with ample program/community space. The construction will also incorporate the restoration of several historically significant exterior features such as the ornate masonry entrance and the wood windows.
