White House Drug Czar Visits Gaudenzia at Park Heights

June 18, 2004

John P. Walters, Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, joined more than 75 community leaders, residents and politicians recently at Gaudenzia at Park Heights in Baltimore, MD. Mr. Walters was in Baltimore as part of the White House’s 25 Cities Initiative, which seeks to reduce America’s drug use by 25% over a five year span. Accompanying Mr. Walters were Baltimore Mayor Martin O’Malley and U.S. Rep. Elijah E. Cummings.

The Park Heights treatment center houses seven distinct programs, offering a continuum of care to recovering drug and alcohol users, based upon the Therapeutic Community model. “People are fighting back. You can see lives change,” commented Mr. Walters following a tour of the facility in which he met with clients, program staff and concerned members of the surrounding community. “People are being healed, and their lives are getting better,” noted Rep. Cummings. “We’ve got to continue to do these things. Treatment providers such as Gaudenzia are vital to a city’s fight against drug addiction.”

According to Michael Harle, President and CEO of Gaudenzia, Inc., community involvement is a key to fighting drug abuse. He pointed out the dramatic turnaround in neighborhood attitudes concerning the Park Heights treatment center since its opening just a few years ago. “The community sees us as an essential part of their fight to clean up the streets,” he said. “The impact on people’s lives is profound.”

Gaudenzia, Inc. is a non-profit organization headquartered in Norristown, PA. It is the largest provider of drug and alcohol treatment services in Pennsylvania and recently expanded its work to Delaware and Maryland Gaudenzia operates a total of 75 programs at 43 locations in all three states.
