MISSION

"One of the guiding principles used by Gaudenzia in the operation of our programs is "responsible love and concern." At Gaudenzia, we understand that addiction is a disease and that treatment can help. Recovery is possible. We know because we have seen it time and time again. We treat our residents with responsible love and concern and strive to instill in them a desire to treat themselves and others in this manner.

Since 1968 when we opened our first program, Gaudenzia has grown tremendously. We've become a comprehensive network of programs that offer treatment services for the chemically dependent and the dually diagnosed (both chemically dependent and mentally ill). The services include detoxification, residential rehabilitation for specialty populations such as women with children, adults, adolescents, those diagnosed with HIV/AIDS, dual diagnosis and an array of programs for the criminal justice population. We provide outpatient, intensive outpatient, partial hospitalization, halfway house, transitional housing and recovery homes. While we continue to provide services at the site of our first program at 18th and Tioga Streets in North Philadelphia today our reach includes programs in 11 counties across the State of Pennsylvania and programs in the states of Maryland and Delaware.

Through the years, our understanding of addiction has grown. We've learned that not all addicts can be helped by a single approach. Men, women and children are affected differently. Accordingly, treatment must be provided to address these varied needs. Time has taught us that if we don't help the children of our clients, those children stand a significant chance of becoming addicts and coming back to us for treatment at some future time. For that reason, we have dedicated our time and resources to the provision of prevention services for the children of our clients and for other high risk youth.

Perhaps most important, though, is that after all these years and after having directly served over forty thousand individuals, we have remained true to our mission to help people affected by chemical dependency, mental illness and related conditions to achieve a better quality of life regardless of their economic status. Here at Gaudenzia, we realize that accomplishment in the field of drug and alcohol treatment is really measured in the lives of our clients and their families.
