course will provide the student with an overview of the various
counseling
theories and their application to chemical dependency
counseling and treatment. The focus will be on assessment, diagnosis,
the core functions of an addictions counselor, and basic counseling
skill building. Counseling theories/approaches will be explored.
Cultural
variables will be identified and their impact on counseling approaches.

Co-occurring Disorders in the Addiction Field and Recovery
[pre-requisite: BIB 100] 3 credits

This
course will provide a comprehensive review of current models,
theories and principles pertinent to the identification, description
and
delineation of major mental disorders. Concepts and terminology
from
the DSM R – IV will be detailed and applied to salient clinical
concerns
and situations arising in the addiction treatment field. Cases and
illustrations will be drawn from the student’s clinical/work
experience.
The use of case consultation with a multi-disciplinary team will
be
highlighted. The intention of this course is to provide a knowledge
base
that will enable the addictions counselor/worker to become better
observers of symptoms and behaviors that constitute the basis for
diagnostic judgments. Treatment planning and the use of psychotropic
medications within the clinical program will be explored.

Explores the art of intercultural communication and cross-cultural
living
as members of the global community. This course will provide an
opportunity
for self-discovery, awareness of “other” and development
of communication
skills required for multi-cultural contexts. Specific issues related
to ethics,
culture, survival and safety in the new environment and stress management
is considered. Basic to this course is the development of relationships
with
people of “other” cultures.

Role of Faith and Spirituality in the Workplace and Recovery

This course will examine a spiritual interpretation of relationships
in human
services and in organizational life. The topic of “what-it-is”
that recovering
individuals and/or human services workers experiences in working-in-the-human
services domains will be the central theme. Spirituality will be
focused on via
the concepts of trust, self-communications, and belonging. The application
of
support groups will be included in the discussions. |
