CRITERIA FOR ADMISSION:
FUNDING: GAUDENZIA
NEW IMAGE PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The program serves substance-abusing homeless women with up to two dependent children under the age of 10. Chemical dependency may be categorized as either drug or alcohol (or cross-addiction), but should be the primary dysfunctional diagnosis. Pregnant women will be admitted regardless of whether they have a dependent child. Applicants must be physically capable of participating in the therapeutic process and personal and child caretaking. It is not possible to accept candidates with severely limiting physical or mental handicaps, nor is the program suitable for those with a chronic and/or active psychosis. Clients must be able to communicate orally in English. Eligibility is based on an initial interview with program staff. Individuals with a history of violent crime, arson or child abuse are considered on an individual basis. Clients must be detoxified, if necessary, before admission to the program. Treatment services for the women consist of a 6 month program in three phases:
Day
care is provided for children during adult treatment activities and at
other times as needed. Children aged 3 and up participate in a prevention
curriculum which is conducted three times per week in 12 week cycles.
School-age children are enrolled in the public school system, but also
receive day care as needed and participate in a scheduled prevention curriculum.
Mothers provide the care for their children when not involved in therapeutic
activity or facility responsibility. The prevention component focuses
on drug and alcohol information, values clarification, and the expression
of feelings through an established curriculum of widely published and
recognized prevention techniques. The Prevention Specialist provides mother/child
sessions as needed with age appropriate children. As with the adults,
the child care staff work closely with the children to see that ancillary
services are obtained from other agencies as needed.
