PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Kindred House is located in West Chester, PA. It is designed specifically to meet the needs of women seeking help for substance abuse. The program is a family style residential community serving women with children, allowing two children to accompany their mother for the entire treatment process. Women who are pregnant are welcome.

The treatment process is six to nine months and is divided into two phases. The first three months are devoted to intervention therapy and the last three months to the resident’s re-entry back into the community.

There are five phases to treatment:
Orientation helps to provide the woman with an understanding of the program, some knowledge of her problem and how it impacts her life. She learns the rules and the level of involvement that must be maintained. Intensive Recovery begins when the woman has progressed to the point of being ready to begin the hard work of self-evaluation. Every attempt to made to address the identified areas of need. The resident must act in a positive and consistent manner in all areas of responsibility which is important to her recovery.

Re-Entry provides the woman with an opportunity to re-enter the community to determine if she is ready to withstand the daily stresses. This allows her to begin solving basic problems such as work discipline. Drug free for the first time, she learns to develop new social acquaintances, budget money, respect and trust her environment, develop better relationships with her spouse, children, family, AA and NA members, positive peers, etc. She plans for stable living arrangements for herself and her children.

Outpatients/Aftercare continues to follow up on the woman’s progress weekly while she re-enter the community. Continuity of care on an outpatient basis helps ease the stress of separation from an intensive, protected environment to living independently and provides support for the responsibilities she will assume such as working and caring for her children.

Graduation happens one year after treatment if the woman is sober, working or volunteering, maintaining independent living for four months minimum, has a sponsor, a support system, and is active in outpatient.
An additional objective is to enable these women to become independent, thereby reducing their reliance upon government support, when this has previously been the case.

The Kindred House Aftercare Program assists the women in making a transitional adjustment from inpatient to outpatient treatment. Kindred's aftercare clients are referred to Gaudenzia's Outreach office in Philadelphia if they return to that area. If they stay in West Chester, they are referred to our Outpatient Program in West Chester. These programs provide individual counseling. Clients stay involved in outpatient and group counseling until graduation from Gaudenzia after one year or more of abstinence from alcohol/drug use, along with other criteria. A transitional living program provides housing and supportive services for some women who complete the program and meet HUD criteria.
