PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY AND PURPOSE:
Gaudenzia People with Hope, founded in 1989, is a twenty-three bed, Therapeutic Community (TC) licensed through the State of Pennsylvania. It is the only licensed (TC) in Pennsylvania specifically designed to provide drug and alcohol treatment for HIV Symptomatic/AIDS individuals. The program is located in our Spring Garden St., Philadelphia facility.

Gaudenzia People with Hope is a 3 to 9 month non-hospital residential, intensive program for homeless, HIV Symptomatic/AIDS, chemically addicted adults and pregnant women. The program provides individual, couples, families, and group therapy, AA/NA/CA 12-step programs, gay and lesbian groups, GED classes, educational seminars covering topics such as HIV/AIDS, nutrition, physical fitness and well, co-dependency, sexually transmitted diseases, healing and spirituality, and recreational activities.

The program includes medical staff whose responsibility is to coordinate medical services for our residents through our collaborative AIDS network providers/referral sources. Group aftercare counseling is provided on-site as well as outpatient counseling services through Gaudenzia Outreach. All staff are trained extensively in HIV/AIDS, as well as additional issues. Case Management services are provided for all residents through the AIDS Preferred Provider Network. Housing, upon completion, is currently provided under a Housing Opportunities for People with AIDS (HOPWA) Grant sponsored through the Office of Housing and Community Development (OHCD) and the Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Programs.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
Gaudenzia People with Hope is a variable-length (90 day minimum) residential, co-ed drug and alcohol treatment program for 20 adults who are HIV/AIDS symptomatic. The program also accepts pregnant females. The goal of People with Hope is to provide drug and alcohol treatment, shelter, medical care, seminars on the HIV disease, and educational services that are designed to enhance the quality of life for the individual. The program was established in 1989 and is the one of the few programs in the county offering residential drug and alcohol treatment to HIV/AIDS individuals in a Therapeutic Community (TC).

The orientation phase is intended to help the individual adjust to the treatment setting, establish medical care, learn norms and rules, and begin to trust the environment and the recovery process. In the intensive phase, he/she becomes more invested in the therapeutic process, through participation in groups (4 times per week), seminars (daily), individual counseling (once per week), house activities, and job responsibilities within the facility. Daily seminars focus on life skills, AIDS related issues, parenting, homosexuality, relapse prevention, nutrition, budgeting and socializing.

Treatment plans are developed individually for each client and includes the resident’s case manager and significant others in the process when ever possible and when such involvement is in the best interest of the resident. Family sessions may be held up to once per month where indicated. Because of the medical status of the residents, a full-time Nurse/Counselor is employed at People with Hope to address their special needs and to coordinate the services clients receive through the AIDS clinics and hospitals.

In Re-entry, residents begin a gradual transition back into the community. Schooling, job readiness training, vocation training, 12-step sponsorship, and preparation for housing are all components of the re-entry phase. When the residents move out of the program, the continuing care phase begins and includes weekly outpatient individual sessions, weekly group sessions at People with Hope, and active participation in a 12-step program while pursuing employment, education, or training. At this stage the client may also be enrolled in the Transitional Housing program or other housing programs in the community. Clients also continue to receive case management services from the AIDS case management network which provides services to people living with HIV.
