The goals of Focus House are to teach clients the basic life skills needed to live as independently and productively as possible in the community, to eliminate the substance abuse patterns that complicate the symptoms of mental illness, and to promote effective, self-motivated involvement in the mental health treatment system. Focus House provides rehabilitation services in a four phase program with emphasis on both chemical dependency and mental disorders. Orientation introduces the client to the program rules, regulations, and philosophies. The Adjustment phase begins after 30 days and consists of the most intensive level of the program activity. Focus House is a Therapeutic Community (TC) which emphasizes the development of a more self-sufficient lifestyle and responsibility for daily personal needs. As in all Gaudenzia residences, the client gradually takes on more responsibility within the environment by practicing the methods needed to cope adequately in society while remaining substance free. After the treatment phase, which lasts 2-6 months, the resident enters the re-entry phase. During re-entry, he begins pursuing external involvement such as vocational training, education and employment. Upon successful completion of the program, follow up case management is provided. If appropriate, the resident may be referred to Progress, another Gaudenzia facility specializing in dual diagnosis but requiring a more advanced level of functioning and entailing less supervision.
