PROGRAM
DESCRIPTION:
Centro Primavera is a drug and alcohol prevention education program for
children ages 5 through 12. The program targets a primarily Hispanic population
in North Central Philadelphia. Centro Primavera applies a prevention approach
which involves family and community, especially designed for children
from high-risk neighborhoods. The program operates in twelve week cycles
with an enrollment of 20 children per session. It is an after-school program
which provides an educational and recreational curriculum.
A variety of early intervention methods are utilized. The program's goal
is to make children aware of the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. It
teaches them to resist drug use in an atmosphere where use is common place.
Centro Primavera uses tested prevention tools to enhance the children's
self esteem. The program guides the development of values which are basic
to making healthy lifestyle choices, and teaches children the skills to
identify positive peers. It can also help to improve relationships between
high-risk children and their parents.
