CO-OCCURRING DISORDERS

Audience: Health & Human Services Professionals

This course introduces participants to co-occurring disorders and is designed to enhance their ability to assess and treat the co-occurring population. During the training period, participants will be able to define, identify, be familiar with, and list key features and characteristics of the co-occurring person. Essentially, participants will leave the training with a comprehensive overview of the complexity, and unique treatment issues and approaches for working with persons with co-occurring disorders and list key features and characteristics of individuals having co-occurring disorders.

Course Goals Include:
  • Define addictive, psychiatric, and co-occurring disorders;
  • Define mental illness and learn the warning signs in adults;
  • Gain a basic understanding of the neurological impact of addiction on the brain and its relationship to co-occurring disorders;
  • Learn how to use the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM);
  • Identify methods, models and best practices for the assessment and treatment of co-occurring disorders;
  • Gain a basic understanding of the role of psychotropic medication in the treatment of mental illness;
  • Identify the unique needs and characteristics of persons with co-occurring disorders, and the impact on access and coordination of services.
